Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua (GCC), Mexico's second largest cement maker after Cemex, has invested $25 million in three new plants in its Samalayuca production complex, located a few miles south of Ciudad Juarez, in the last two months.
GCC's investment is its first after the general financial downturn affecting all sectors.
Two of the plants started production about two months ago, with concrete panels and dry mortars as their main products. The third plant, which will make aggregates, is scheduled to begin operating in a few weeks, according to the company.
Manuel Milán, GCC's CEO, said construction materials demand has remained high in Juarez despite the recession.
Milán said the group saw a slight general drop in production, but it soon stabilized and began a quick recovery.
Chihuahua-based Cementos de Chihuahua has plants in Mexico, United States and Bolivia.
GCC's US operations include plants in Colorado (Pueblo), South Dakota (Rapid City) and New Mexico (Tijeras), as well as distribution terminals in New Mexico (Albuquerque), Texas (El Paso), Colorado (Denver, Henderson), South Dakota (Brookings, Sioux Falls), North Dakota (Bismark, Minot) and Wyoming (Evansville, Moorcroft).
