More than 6,500 athletes from 169 Mexican higher-education institutions converged at the state-of-the-art facilities of Universidad Autonoma de Chihuahua last month to compete in Universiada 2010, the country's college olympics.
UACH, Chihuahua's main public university, finished fifth in the final medal ranking and second in the overall point ranking. This year's universiada had 19 official disciplines.
UACH won ten gold medals in taekwondo, archery, tennis (singles), aerobic gymnastics, karate-do, handball, 800 meters, 3,000 meters hurdles and baseball.
The other main Chihuahuan university in the competition, Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez, finished eight in the medal ranking with seven gold medals and fifth in the overall point ranking.
The five institutions with the most gold medals won were Centro de Estudios Superiores del Estado de Sonora, Instituto Tecnologico de Sonora, Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (Monterrey campus), and Universidad Autonoma de Chihuahua.
The 12-day event marked the second time Chihuahua City hosts a universiada. The city also was the venue for the 1998 universiada.
