Juarez universities expand, boost enrollment
Sunday, 06 June 2010 11:52

universities_expandUniversidad Tecnologica de Ciudad Juarez (UTCJ) announced it will be offering classes at a new campus in one of Juarez's most underserved communities west of the city starting next September.

The university will offer Industrial Operations and Processes Engineering, International Logistics Engineering, Accounting and Marketing degrees in its new location, according to university rector Humberto Morales.

Students will be taking classes at a provisional campus known as Desarrollo Juvenil del Norte while UTCJ's own new building is completed.

The new university building, to be located alongside a sports unit in Anapra, is expected to start operating in mid 2011 and will initially consist of 16 classrooms, three laboratories, 12 professor units and five administrative units.

UTCJ plans to start classes with about 200 students this year, but expects to increase enrollment to 450 as soon as its new building is completed next year and to 900 soon after.

Students will only have to pay a 1,600-peso fee, or around USD $123, for enrollment, with no additional fees or monthly payments.

UACJ gives 710 students choice

As Juarez's City of Knowledge project begins to materialize, Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez (UACJ), the city's flagship university, will accept 710 more students next August with the launch a new campus, part of the new multi-university complex.

The 710 students, who otherwise would have been turned down for lack of space, will be able to enroll in degrees including Mechatronics, Psychology, Veterinary Medicine, Law, Business Administration, Physical Education, Graphic Design, Accounting, Educational Intervention, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Computing Systems, Automotive Systems, Civil Engineering and Architecture.

Up to 4,500 new students will be admitted at UACJ campuses in Juarez, Nuevo Casas Grandes and Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua, according to UACJ rector Jorge Quintana Silveyra.

Technology Park expands in Chihuahua City

Looking to boost its contribution to the development of Chihuahua City's automotive and aerospace clusters, Parque de Innovación y Transferencia de Tecnologia (PIT2) is investing about $3.4 million to build new laboratories starting late this year.

The new facilities, scheduled to be completed by mid 2011, will be made to comply with the same environmental standards that earned the original PIT2 building the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

PIT2's existing building generates up to 30% of its energy using wind and solar energy systems.

The innovation and technology transfer park, part of Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), Chihuahua City campus, has developed five technologies, incubated 11 high-technology companies and accelerated eight more entities.

PIT2 was created to offer incubation space for software, automation and electronics companies in the State, and it has signed agreements with firms as Visteon, ITNova, Freescale, SACEM, SIMS, TESTING, TGC and DINAMICA.

The new PIT2 building will be located just aside the Visteon Design Center.
