Ciudad Juarez is breaking ground on a new 1,800-hectare educational complex consisting of eight universities and technology institutes in a City of Knowledge.
At least two local higher-education institutions, UACJ and ITCJ, expect to begin classes here in late 2009 and mid 2010.
Instituto Tecnológico de Ciudad Juárez [ITCJ], the city's oldest technical institute, will be the first to have operations at the new educational-scientific district, with construction work set to begin in the next weks.
In a project led by Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juarez [UACJ] and the Chihuahua State Government, the new educational district will house classrooms and research centers of ITCJ, Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua [UACH], Instituto Politécnico Nacional [IPN], Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México [UNAM], Colegio de Bachilleres [Cobach], Tec Milenio and Colegio de la Frontera Norte [Colef].
UACJ plans to start operations as early as August 2010 with up to 9,300 students.
The flagship university of Ciudad Juarez is working on strategic development agreements with IPN and UNAM, México's highest public technical institution and the largest university of Mexico and Latin America, respectively.
UACJ will have the biggest campus within the City of Knowledge [300 hectares], followed by ITCJ [20 hectares], UACH [20], IPN [13], UNAM [10], Cobach [10], Tec Milenio [5] and Colef [5]. A Sports Unit will occupy another 48 hectares.
The State Government donated the land.
Besides the learning facilities, the overall City of Knowledge project envisons housing units around the complex, a commercial district, a small industrial park and a services area, according con UACJ and State Government sources.
