Students from several Juarez high schools took part last week at the annual robot competition organized by mechatronics engineering students from Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), Juarez campus.
The competition, now in its tenth year, is aimed at getting high school students interested on the mechatronics program offered by the prestigious technology institution, affectionately known as Tec de Monterrey and considered the MIT of Mexico.
Dozens of high school students from CBTIS 114, Cobach, Preparatoria Central Hermanos Escobar and from ITESM Juarez's own high school participated in the event.
Students had to build and program a robot to overcome a set of challenges and build a bridge using recyclable materials.
The competition was attended by scouts and observers from National Instruments, which has presence in Juarez.
UTCJ to install new robots
Universidad Tecnologica de Ciudad Juarez, a fast-emerging technology university supported by the Chihuahua State government, will install two new robots this year as part of its permanent technology updating program, according to Salvador Alvarez Mata, planning director at the university.
The Fanuc robots, to be used for practice at the university's mechatronics department, will be installed at a new building currently under construction.
By mandate, UTCJ reviews and updates all its career programs every two years in coordination with companies operating in Juarez.
The university also has a policy to permanently upgrade its technology infrastructure, so its computers and software are up to date and in line with world trends.
Some companies allow UTCJ students to use their equipment to get them direct knowledge of the actual technology being used in the local industrial base.
