UTCJ is a leading higher education institution serving the Juárez community since 1999.
The university offers six degrees, including mechatronics, production processes, information and communications technologies, electricity and industrial electronics, industrial maintenance, and accounting.
A critical part of UTCJ success has been its close coordination with the local industrial community, paying close attention to its specific needs.
Juarez has a large industrial and manufacturing base requiring a substantial number of well-trained professionals and technicians.
Many of the companies with operations here include world-class giants as Delphi Automotive Systems, Visteon, Siemens, Thomson, Philips, Bosch, Foxconn, Lear Corporation, Flextronics and Scientific Atlanta, to name just a few.
Mechatronics has a high demand within the industrial community. The degree is offered nationwide, mainly for industrial purposes.
According to Professor Martín Reyes, director of the Mechatronics department, UTCJ currently has about 400 mechatronics students. About 120 will graduate next november.
Mechatronics is a hybrid technology. It combines mechanics, IT, electronics and control systems.
“Our students make prototypes of industrial robots. They have the skills to make robots of every kind”, Reyes said.
While explaining that the robot shown at YouTube was not made by UTCJ students, but is rather used for programming practice, he said his students have made several robot projects.
“We have a cartesian robot, and one of our engineers developed several cartesian robots for assembly operations”, he said. “We showed one of these at the Fifth National Mechatronics Congress in Torreón, Coahuila”.
He said mechatronics students learn how to make a robot and at the end of the course they have to program a rutine for them.
UTCJ has a special department to coordinate education programs with the local industry.
If a company has some specific need, UTCJ has an academic corps in place to meet its staff and find a solution for them, Reyes said.
“It’s a win-win situation – the company solves its problem, and our teachers increase their academic value”.
Currently the university is working with Harman/Becker, Clarion Technologies and Ecorec on a variety of technology projects.
“Prior to opening a new degree, we make a viability study. We seek feedback from the industrial community, and they explain their needs”, Reyes said.
Mechatronics is a technology specialty with a high demand among the State’s industrial community, and such a close coordination with companies has paid off.
According to UTCJ officials, mechatronics and other UTCJ students quickly join the local workforce as they graduate.
“We make sure our students can find a job after they leave. All our students have a guaranteed job” in companies with operations in Juarez, Reyes said. “One of our former students is a manager at Clarion Technologies. He has been suporting our program, as he regularly hires some of our mechatronics students”.
UTCJ has a student follow-up program, and estimates 80 per cent of its former students are working in their fields.
