festivalcountry01Southern Chihuahua native Ricardo Gonzalez won this year's PBR Chihuahua Challenge 100 bull-riding competition during the Chihuahua Country Festival 2010, an annual event including barrel racing competitions, a cowgirl beauty pageant, a cowboy|girl catwalk and concerts featuring national and international country performers.

Gonzalez took the US$10,000 prize with 82.5 points riding Toy Story, defeating 25 riders from Mexico, United States, Canada, Costa Rica and Brazil. Marcela Ochoa won the female barrel racing competition.

The Mexican team was led by captain Gerardo Venegas, from Juarez. Dexter Hoover (US), Marcelo Nunhes (Brazil), Adrian Ferreiro (Chihuahua, Mexico) and Gustavo Pedrero (Jalisco, Mexico) participated in the competition.

As part of the four-day event, country performers Caballo Dorado (Chihuahua) and Ocho Segundos (Juarez), Danni Leigh (US) and Tennessee Country (Argentina) led the festival's concert fare.

Children were also part of the festivities, with a mechanical bull they were able to ride at the Cowgirl Expo premises courtesy of local cowboy group Cowboys Heaven.

Other activities in the festival included a reining exhibition, a rodeo clinic, a children's rodeo, a therapeutic riding exhibition, a 7-kilometer country dance, a horse exhibition and an interactive farm.

festivalcountry02More than 130 exhibitors had stands marketing their products and services.

Chihuahua's Festival Country, held August 26-29 at the city's Convention Center, pre-started August 7 with a stampede of more than 200 calves in the streets of downtown Chihuahua City.

With vast prairies and grazing ranges, Chihuahua has historically been cattle country and has a deep-rooted cowboy (vaquero) culture.
