A record-setting crowd converged last week at the beautiful desert scenery of the Samalayuca dunes 50 kilometers south of Juarez for a family-friendly weekend that saw three-time sandboarding world champion Digiacomo Dias of Brazil perform his best moves.
Aventura en Dunas, now in its 11th year, had this year an official sandboarding competition and a special demonstration by Digiacomo Dias in a track designed by himself down 50-meter-high dunes.
During the day, visitors enjoyed and participated in activities as a volleyball, mountain biking, a 21-kilometer running race, motocross and rhythm sports.
Digiacomo said he was impressed by the site, noting the sand quality, and organizers proposed that he offer some sandboarding talks to local children and teens.
Officials said a better-than-expected attendance estimated at 5,600 filled the reserved spaces for parking and camping, forcing organizers to close the site's access to vehicles earlier than anticipated.
The event's area was strictly limited because the Samalayuca dunes is a protected natural reserve.
