Beating the harsh terrain in the mountains surrounding Juarez, almost 1,800 cyclists took part in the Chupacabras 100km/50km bicycle race this year Oct. 8 as the mountain challenge turned 15.
Chihuahuan-born Manuel Salas was declared the winner after Marco Antonio Escarcega, who finished first, was disqualified for failing to complete the full route.
Salas reached the finish line timing 4:07, while Jose Guadalupe Cruz finished second. Last Year Salas was the second one to cross the finish line, again after Marco Antonio Escarcega.
On the women's race, Melissa Saldivar claimed victory after 5:14. This is the first year she competes in Chupacabras 100km.
Adriana Quintana, from Juarez, finished second. Up to 30% of participants were women.
The Chupacabras race is followed by Chupacabritas, a children's version of the bike race held in the historic El Chamizal park in Juarez.
Hundreds of Juarenses gathered afterwards at the park premises to enjoy music, dance, archery competitions and hamburgers.
