Chihuahua is Mexico's most wired city and Latin America's second, according to a book just released by Motorola. Only Sao Paulo makes the most use of city-wide IT resources and services than Chihuahua State's capital in the subcontinent.
Another Mexican city, Merida, shared the No. 2 position in the Digital Cities Global Ranking, a 2009 study of 150 Latin American municipalities conducted by Convergencia Research.
Chihuahua outscored other Mexican cities noted for their high development standards, as San Nicolas de los Garza and San Pedro Garza Garcia in Nuevo Leon state.
According to the study, Chihuahua had its highest marks in IT infrastructure and services, especially e-government and security, with all city police cruisers equipped with GPS systems.
As well, 100% of city buildings use an optical fiber MAN network covering 150 sq/k. The Chihuahua Digital program offers free Wi-Fi connectivity in all public areas.
The study weighed factors such as IT infrastructure, e-services, networking and commitment to reduce the digital divide.
