"Change is a gift from heaven and it involves great risk and responsibility", said the President of the former Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachov, during a speech last week in Juarez Competitiva, a forum highlighting our city's strengths.
"When change is necessary, we have to risk everything, we have to be brave enough for change", said the leader who steered Russia and the Soviet Union to a whole new order without a violent revolution and made possible a political turnaround in Europe and in East-West relations.
"I'm sure you will vanquish", he said, referring to the drug-related violence affecting Juarez and most of Mexico.
Gorbachov, recipient of the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize, was eagerly listened by almost 2,000 Juarenses at Centro Cultural Paso del Norte.
He was one of several national and international guests during the two-week event.
Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani; first Mexican astronaut Rodolfo Neri Vela; and President of Corporate and Government Affairs of ManpowerGroup David Arkless were among the distinguished guests.
Rigoberta Menchú, also a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was in Chihuahua last week, although for a different event.
